On the need for a Registry of Internet Discussants

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 6, 2008, 6:37 PM
  • Mood: Bemused
After reading responses to this editorial blog: on the need for a revolution in camera user interface design and structure, I have decided the time has come for a global registry of persons permitted to contribute to online discussion. The point of the registry would be to make sure ignorant people cannot express their "opinions" online.

I have been toying with this idea for a while but the clincher for me came as this response to the blog:

"well, the problem with revolution is that when it occurs in the confines of a matter with a certain amount of history, the revolution tends to break the hereditary roots, the planted drivers of the system, producing a completely new, yet much consumable, loose paradigm.."

Valid argument or a paragon of puerile pretension? Try as I might, I have not been able to discern any comprehensible argument from this comment.

For too long, the internet has been the domicile of spurious arguments like the aforementioned which serve not to benefit the wider community, but simply clog the tubes with unwanted detritus.

In response to this threat I suggest panels of computer aided experts, particularly those versed in logic, be established in each internet faring country to review, on a case-by-case basis, each individual’s eligibility to contribute to online discussion.

Eligibility would be based on an individual’s comprehension of their native tongue, including the skill to combine words into a statement that conveys meaning and proven demonstrability to apply logic and facts to their arguments.

To ensure continuing quality in debate and discussion amongst registered contributors, stringent standards in reasoning, clarity and expression will have to be followed. Failure to do so will result in exclusion from the registry, temporary or otherwise, depending on the severity of the offense.

Given time and effort, I believe we can win back the internet from the forces of inanity, nonsense and trumpery!

For those in need of further convincing of the merits of my proposal, please see any comments posted on any YouTube video: [link]
